I love Mexico City, and even though I’ve visited it five times, I know I’ll go back again.
Vibrant and intense, the Mexican capital is full of activities, landmarks, and museums for all tastes.
And as with any destination, choosing the right neighborhood and hotel plays a key role in the success of the trip.
If you decide to stay for more than a week, some neighborhoods will allow you to experience a more local vibe, at the rhythm of its residents.
On the other hand, if you’re only staying for a few days, it’s better to stay near the main attractions to make the most of your time and avoid long commutes.
But making the right decision isn’t always easy when visiting a city for the first time.
That’s why I’ve put together this article: you’ll find a selection of the best hotels in Mexico City, organized by neighborhood, to help you choose the one that suits you best.

Hotels in Mexico City: Where to Stay According to the Neighborhood
Neither Roma, nor Nápoles, nor Polanco
If you’ve already done some research on the different neighborhoods that make up the city, these names probably sound familiar.
These areas have become extremely popular in recent years due to their relatively high level of safety and easy access to a wide variety of services: restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, and more.
And while these neighborhoods do have their charm —and I do recommend exploring them— I’ve decided not to include them in this article because they’ve become quite gentrified.
The result? Real estate prices have skyrocketed, forcing many residents to move to other areas.
And with them, much of the local soul has vanished, replaced by trendy spots that often resemble those you can find in any major city around the world, with prices that exclude a large part of the local population.
That said, I don’t want to paint an entirely negative picture of these neighborhoods, which also offer plenty in terms of gastronomy and culture, for example.
However, I place great importance on promoting ethical tourism that respects local communities.
And while gentrification is by no means the sole responsibility of tourists, I do believe we have a certain responsibility in the dynamics we contribute to.
So, why not step off the beaten path, avoid contributing to the gentrification of these areas… and take the opportunity to discover lesser-known, more authentic, and equally fascinating neighborhoods?

Hotels in Mexico City: The Best Neighborhoods to Stay In
In this article, I’m going to introduce you to 4 neighborhoods that, in my opinion, are perfect for exploring the city and immersing yourself in the local lifestyle.
1. Centro histórico
It’s the heart of Mexico City, a must-see for all tourists, where you’ll find monuments, museums, and markets.
If you only have a few days to visit the capital, this is the neighborhood I recommend, as you’ll be able to explore the main attractions on foot. The atmosphere is unique and vibrant.
In addition, you’ll have access to a wide range of bars, restaurants, and shops, from major international chains to local businesses.
Hotels in the Centro Histórico
Hostal Casa MX Centro ($): This adults-only accommodation is an excellent option for budget travelers. In fact, the dorm beds are very affordable!
Hotel Isabel ($$): I stayed at this charming hotel, located right in the city center. Its beautiful central courtyard with columns truly gives the feeling of being in a historic building. The rooms facing the street can be a bit noisy. Recommended for solo travelers or couples.
Hotel Frida Costa Azul ($$): I spent several nights at this hotel, very close to the historic center. My room faced the inner courtyard, which made it very quiet. For digital nomads, it’s an excellent option as the rooms have a desk, making it easy to work.
Hotel Principal ($$): I stayed at this large hotel with numerous rooms. Located in a historic building, it allows you to reach the main attractions in the city center within minutes. It’s a great option for couples.
Zócalo Central & Rooftop Mexico City ($$$$): Right next to the cathedral, this late 19th-century building offers renovated rooms and suites, some with views of the Zócalo. Perfect for couples!
What to do in the centro histórico?
- Stroll around the Zócalo: This huge square is the historic heart of the city center.
- Visit the cathedral: This impressive building is one of the city’s symbols and proudly overlooks the Zócalo.
- Go to the National Palace: This iconic building houses murals by Diego Rivera.
- Visit the Templo Mayor: This archaeological site lets you discover the remains of ancient Tenochtitlan.
- Dine on a rooftop: Many rooftop terraces around the Zócalo offer stunning views of the city.
2. Coyoacán
This is another tourist neighborhood in the Mexican capital that will allow you to discover many attractions while enjoying a unique atmosphere.
With cobblestone streets, beautiful colonial houses, and charming little plazas, Coyoacán offers a serene and typically Mexican vibe.
It’s also an area rich in restaurants and bars to suit all tastes.

Casa Tuna ($$$): If you want to treat yourself to a beautifully decorated and comfortable place to stay, this is your best option! It also features a garden and a terrace to relax after a day of sightseeing. Some rooms include a sitting area and/or a balcony.
What to do in Coyoacán?
- Visit Frida Kahlo’s House: This is the famous Blue House where the artist lived.
- Eat at the Coyoacán market: This local market offers a wide variety of traditional Mexican dishes.
- Relax at Centenario Park: This park provides a peaceful setting to take a break between visits.
- Have a coffee at El Jarocho: This iconic café has been serving coffee for decades.
3. Paseo de la Reforma
This wide, iconic avenue runs through Mexico City from east to west. It’s also an excellent starting point for exploring the capital.
It’s lined with skyscrapers, iconic monuments, renowned museums, and large hotels.
If you like lively, grand avenues, the neighborhood around Paseo de la Reforma can be a great choice.
You’ll be ideally located to visit the city center and other major tourist spots.
The neighborhood is also lively at night, with numerous bars, restaurants, and cafés—perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.

- Visit the National Museum of Anthropology: One of the favorite museums, offering great insight into Mexico’s pre-Hispanic civilizations.

4. San Rafael
Close to the historic center and Paseo de la Reforma, San Rafael is a residential neighborhood with an artistic soul.
Here you’ll find beautiful old houses, art galleries, theaters, and a slightly bohemian vibe that makes it very pleasant to explore.
I like this area because it offers a more local and authentic atmosphere while staying close to the city’s main points of interest.
Additionally, the neighborhood offers a good selection of cafés, traditional cantinas, and small restaurants waiting to be discovered.

5. San Maria la Ribera
Santa María la Ribera is not very touristy, which is why I especially appreciate it, with its quiet streets, Porfirian-style buildings, and small-town atmosphere.
It’s an excellent option if you want to get a little away from the hustle and bustle of the city center and discover another side of Mexico City without being too far away.
