3 is the number of times I’ve dropped my backpack in Salvador de Bahia. I think it’s safe to say that it’s one of my favorite cities. Its delicious cuisine and vibrant culture continue to draw me in year after year. Where to Stay in Salvador Bahia? Neighborhoods + Hotels
SALVADOR in a few words
Salvador de Bahia spans approximately 694 square kilometers and is divided into 171 diverse districts, from modern neighborhoods to historic areas like Pelourinho.
Almost 3 million people live in this city that is far from flat, with an altitude ranging from sea level up to around 70 meters, marked by hills that shape its landscape.
Salvador has two distinct levels—the Cidade Alta (Upper City) and Cidade Baixa (Lower City)—connected by the iconic Elevador Lacerda.
Approximately 30% of the population lives in favelas interwoven throughout the urban fabric, especially on hillsides and in peripheral areas. Another part of the population resides in the historic center, while the rest live in large residential areas, many of them quite luxurious. This situation underscores the stark social contrast present in the city.

Where to stay in Salvador Bahia?
Deciding where to stay in such a large city can feel pretty overwhelming. That’s why I’m here to help by introducing you to 6 neighborhoods you should consider. To make it even easier, I’ll also suggest a few great hotels.
1. Pelourinho
Pelourinho is the historic center, and it is honestly one of the most beautiful areas of the city. Not wonder why UNESCO decided to make it a World Heritage site.
You will be fascinated by its colorful colonial architecture, and its precious churches. It is also an amazing neighborhood to experience lively music, Afro-Brazilian culture, and be close to restaurants, bars, galleries…
However, as it is such a bustling touristy area, it is not the safest. So, please always keep an eye on your belongings and don’t stay too late, at night.
My favorite hotels in Pelourinho
Laranjeiras ($): For budget-conscious travelers, this hotel offers dormitory beds at a very reasonable price. The rooms are furnished with wooden furniture, and there are washing machines and a shared kitchen available for guests.
Bahiacafé Hotel ($$$): This boutique hotel, located in an 18th-century building, offers rooms decorated with local artwork. It’s an excellent option for couples looking for a bit of comfort.
Casa do Amarelindo ($$$$): Housed in a 19th-century colonial mansion, this hotel offers luxurious accommodations. It’s the perfect choice for couples looking to enjoy a peaceful stay right in the heart of the historic center!
Hotel Villa Bahia ($$$$$): If you want to indulge in a truly luxurious stay, this charming hotel, located in two traditional colonial buildings, offers renovated luxury rooms, a pool, and beautiful gardens.

2. Santo Antonio Alem do Carmo
I stayed in Santo Antônio Além do Carmo, a neighborhood just a short walk from Pelourinho. It’s a quiet area since not many tourists venture there.
It’s a shame because it has beautiful churches and charming cobbled streets. It’s also very lively at night, with live music on the streets and plenty of spots to enjoy the nightlife.
The contrast between the locals, who live modestly, and the wealthy tourists visiting art studios and cozy cafes, is striking. This can make you a target for thieves, as I experienced—I had my phone stolen and even ended up with a broken nose. Staying in this area is a great idea, but as with anywhere else in the world, be cautious!
My favorite hotels in Santo Antônio Além do Carmo
Bed & Breakfast Villa Carmo ($): For families, this is an ideal place as the triple rooms are very affordable. Nicely decorated, they offer plenty of space. Breakfast is served on a sunny terrace—perfect for starting the day with energy!
Hotel Villa Salvador ($$): All rooms are air-conditioned and come with a wardrobe. Additionally, some rooms have a balcony to enjoy the nice weather.
Aram Yami Hotel Boutique ($$$$): With its six exclusive suites, this hotel, located in a 19th-century Baroque-style building, is perfect for a luxurious stay. You can relax in its two pools and enjoy panoramic views of the Todos Os Santos Bay.
What to do in Santo Antônio Além do Carmo?

Barra is one of Salvador’s most popular areas, thanks to its beach. It’s a great choice for a stay since you can easily go for a swim while still being close to Pelourinho.
Barra is also known for its iconic lighthouse, where you can enjoy beautiful golden sunsets. The area offers a variety of nice hotels, a wide selection of restaurants and cafes, and beach bars.
Plus, it’s a relatively safe area, though, as always, you should keep an eye on your belongings.

I once stayed near Rio Vermelho and really enjoyed the area. It’s quite far from Pelourinho, but it’s a great neighborhood if you want to slow down and enjoy beach life.
It’s also perfect for nightlife lovers, as this vibrant neighborhood is packed with bars, clubs, and restaurants.
Like many areas that blend bohemian and contemporary vibes, it’s becoming more gentrified by the day, so choose your hotel and shops carefully.

Hostel Cantinho do Mar ($): This hostel is perfect for all travelers who prefer to save money on their trip and aren’t afraid to sleep in a shared dormitory! You’ll love the view from the common room and the terrace!
Rede Andrade Mar Hotel – Rio Vermelho ($$): This sea-view accommodation also features an indoor pool. All rooms have air conditioning and a private bathroom. The price is really affordable for solo travelers or couples!

I once stayed in Ondina and really liked it because it’s a great place to experience a more local way of life. This coastal neighborhood also offers easy beach access.
On a tourist level, Ondina may not be the best area, but it provides a balance between tranquility and energy, especially during carnival season. And don’t forget, you can reach Pelourinho or Barra very quickly by moto or car.
