It’s impossible to talk about the city without mentioning surfing. Zicatela Beach, famously known as the “Mexican Pipeline”, attracts athletes from around the globe, eager to take on its massive, challenging waves.
It’s no surprise that numerous surfing competitions are held in this vibrant Mexican city.
But don’t worry if you’re not a seasoned surfer! You can still give it a try by taking lessons offered by the many surf schools scattered across the beaches of Zicatela, La Punta, and Carrizalillo.
What are the best activities and Puerto Escondido tours?
I’ve been to Puerto no less than four times, so while I wouldn’t call myself an expert, I know this destination quite well. Here’s my selection of the best Puerto Escondido tours.
1. Releasing Baby Turtles
The first time I traveled to Puerto, it was, of course, to relax on the beach, but more importantly, to release baby turtles—a decision I absolutely don’t regret.
I was lucky enough to release two baby turtles myself, and it remains one of the most magical moments of my life.
To help combat this, local organizations collect turtle eggs laid on the beaches to protect them from predators and ensure they can hatch safely. The eggs are then taken to nearby hatcheries, where they incubate for an average of 50 days.
Your role in this process? To help the newly hatched turtles make their way to the ocean, hoping they’ll survive to adulthood.
The money raised through this activity supports these organizations in continuing their vital work of rescuing baby turtles. So, not only will you experience an unforgettable moment, but you’ll also contribute to the conservation of local wildlife and the survival of these incredible creatures.
There are many tours offering this activity, but I recommend going directly through an organization like Viva Mar—I had a fantastic experience with them.
Continuing with wildlife activities: dolphin and whale watching.
From November to March, these incredible mammals can be spotted off the coast of Puerto. To escape the freezing northern waters, they embark on a long migration to the warm Pacific shores.
This is the perfect opportunity to hop on a boat and observe them up close.
To enjoy this magical experience, cherished by both children and adults, choose a company that uses eco-friendly boats that don’t pollute the marine environment and that keeps a respectful distance from the animals to minimize disturbance.
Let’s dive further into the underwater world to discover the diverse marine species that call it home. The waters around Puerto Escondido, and especially the nearby Huatulco Bay, are renowned for their rich and abundant marine life.
In addition to manta rays and swordfishes, you’ll also have the chance to spot sea turtles. Just remember to keep a respectful distance to avoid disturbing these animals in their natural habitat.
Leaving the water behind, we’ll take to the skies to observe the birds. On this excursion, you’ll explore the beauty of the Manialtepec Lagoon, where you can spot a variety of species that call it home.
You might have the chance to see ibis, spoonbills, or herons. Your guide will also reveal all the secrets of the local fauna and flora, providing a deeper understanding of the area’s ecosystem.
Get ready for a unique experience as you witness the rare phenomenon of luminous plankton, a natural chemical reaction known as bioluminescence. This occurs when microorganisms in the water emit light when disturbed, creating a shimmering, magical effect.
This incredible spectacle takes place in only a few locations around the world, including the lagoons of Puerto Escondido, so it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see it!
During this tour, you’ll learn more about this natural phenomenon, the lagoon’s ecosystem, and the role of plankton.
You can even take a dip and observe the magical lights up close. A simple yet fascinating experience, perfect for sharing with the whole family.
For nature lovers, here’s an activity you’ll enjoy: paddle through the mangroves of the Manialtepec Lagoon on a kayak excursion, a mode of transport that doesn’t disturb the local wildlife and has a minimal ecological impact.
In addition to admiring the landscape, you’ll learn more about the plants and the migratory and local birds that thrive in this wild, natural setting.
If you’re craving some adrenaline, zip-lining in the village of San Juan Lachao is an excellent option. In a small group, you’ll explore the Oaxaca forest, known for its rich biodiversity.
Then comes the highlight of the experience: the zip-line circuit, offering a privileged view of the local flora and the various water currents that flow through the area.
