There is no 5G in Benin yet, but 3G and 4G cover around 90% of the territory*, so there is little risk of being without network for too long during your stay.
That said, coverage is logically better in cities than in rural areas.
As for Wi-Fi, I personally experienced very unstable connections in all my accommodations, especially in Cotonou. For me, as someone who works online, this was quite challenging.
You should also know that power outages are unfortunately quite common (I spent 1.5 days without internet upon arrival), which also means no Wi-Fi.
That’s why I strongly recommend having mobile internet on your phone, at least so you don’t have to worry about your connection if the power goes out — as long as your device is properly charged 😉

In Benin, there are two main mobile operators offering SIM cards and several top-up options:

Of course, you can buy a SIM card as soon as you arrive in Benin.
At Cotonou Airport, before exiting the terminal, there are shops where you can purchase one. As everywhere in the world, these SIM cards are generally a bit more expensive than if you buy them in the city.
Since most payments in Benin are made in cash, buying a SIM card upon arrival can be inconvenient if you don’t want to withdraw money directly at the airport.

In official operator stores or in street shops

My tips to stay connected in Benin without stress
Benin is an incredible destination, but it does require a bit of planning. That’s why I strongly emphasize the importance of staying connected to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Here are a few tips to reduce stress:
- Don’t wait until your battery drops to 5% before recharging your phone. In case of a power outage, what would you do? Plan ahead and try to keep your phone reasonably charged at all times.
- Download useful apps before your trip, such as Gozem, the app for booking motorcycle taxis, or VCS. They’ll be very helpful for getting around the country.
- Download offline maps on Google Maps so you can still navigate and find your way even without a network connection.
- Finally, write down your accommodation’s address and phone number on paper, in case you end up without battery and without network access.
