After four three-month stays in this country that I adore, I recommend spending a few days in Recife to get a first taste of the unique atmosphere of Brazil’s northeast.

Here, the pace of life slows down, but the culture pulses strongly between the modern skyscrapers of Boa Viagem and the historic buildings of the Old Town.

The city is also a fantastic starting point for day trips to charming villages and paradise-like beaches.

I also recommend visiting Olinda, located just a 15-minute drive or motorcycle ride away. It’s a picturesque city full of history, where Carnival is experienced as a truly unique event.

Recife in a nutshell

Recife is the capital of the state of Pernambuco, located in the northeastern region of Brazil.

Washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the city enjoys a pleasant tropical climate throughout the year.

With a population of approximately 1.7 million inhabitants, Recife ranks among the largest urban centers in the country.

The city blends modern residential neighborhoods, architectural remnants from the colonial era, and more underprivileged areas.

Each year, Recife attracts many visitors, both Brazilian and foreign, drawn by its beaches, rich historical heritage, and vibrant cultural life—especially during its famous Carnival.

Hotels in Recife: The Best Neighborhoods to Stay In

The city of Recife spans several kilometers, extending from the ocean to the inland areas. However, many neighborhoods hold little tourist interest, especially if you’re staying for a short time.

If you’re a slow travel enthusiast like me, I recommend staying first in Boa Viagem to have the beach within easy reach, and then in Recife Centro or Recife Antigo to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the historic center.

On the other hand, if you’re only spending a few days in Recife, choose your neighborhood based on your interests and what you want to explore.

1. Boa Viagem

Boa Viagem is the most well-known neighborhood in Recife throughout Brazil. And with good reason: its 8 kilometers of beach make it the ideal area to relax by the sea.

It offers a mix of hotels, restaurants, bars, and shopping centers, all within a laid-back and pleasant atmosphere. There are options for every budget—from upscale beachfront hotels to more modest accommodations further inland. The same goes for the restaurants and bars.

If you want to enjoy the beach during your stay, this is definitely the place to be.

That said, keep in mind that swimming in the sea is prohibited due to… sharks! But you can still cool off in the natural tide pools.

Hotels in Boa Viagem

Quarto Duplo ($$): Several rooms are available in this apartment located near the neighborhood’s shopping center. Some feature a balcony, and all have access to a shared bathroom. Perfect for couples or solo travelers!

Aram Beach ($$): If you prefer staying in an apartment for more freedom, this is a recommended option. Clean and comfortable, all units also include access to the outdoor pool!

Park Hotel ($$): Located just 100 meters from Boa Viagem Beach, this simple-style hotel offers several amenities, including a pool with ocean views and a bar that’s perfect for unwinding.

Hotel Atlante Plaza ($$$): Located right on the seafront, this hotel offers guests a wide range of amenities: a rooftop pool, sun terrace, gym, and sauna. A true oasis to relax and forget about the daily routine!

What to do in Boa Viagem?

  • Swim in the natural tide pools: Formed by reefs at low tide, they offer calm and warm waters.
  • Drink a coconut water on the beach (or a caipirinha): Relax on a lounger facing the ocean while enjoying a refreshing drink.
  • Visit the Feirinha de Boa Viagem: This lively craft market offers jewelry, clothing, souvenirs, and local specialties.
  • Visit the Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Boa Viagem: This charming historic church features simple and elegant architecture.

2. Recife Antigo

Recife Antigo is the historic and cultural heart of the city. Here, you’ll find colorful colonial buildings, Baroque churches, and charming cobblestone alleys.

On weekends, the neighborhood comes alive with its craft market and performances that create a pleasant and festive atmosphere.

It’s also where the city’s main museums and many shops are located. In short, it’s the perfect area if you’re looking for culture and history.

Keep in mind that the neighborhood isn’t the safest, especially at night, so stay alert.

Hotels in Recife Antigo

Mangue Oranje Hostel ($): This is the recommended option for budget travelers who want to stay in the heart of the historic center, as the beds in shared dormitories are very affordable. The private rooms, meanwhile, can accommodate up to 3 people.

Apartamento Aconchegante ($$): This cozy apartment, located near Recife Antigo, features two bedrooms—perfect for a stay with family or friends.

What to do in Recife Antigo?

  • Take a photo at Marco Zero: Located by the sea, this symbolic spot marks the geographic center of Recife.
  • Visit the Museu do Frevo: Dedicated to Recife’s iconic dance, this living museum combines music, costumes, and interactive exhibits.
  • Discover the synagogue: Kahal Zur Israel, the first synagogue in the Americas, tells the story of the Jewish community in Recife.
  • Enjoy a malt drink at As Galerias: At this local institution, savor a delicious malted milkshake.

3. Recife Centro

I really like this neighborhood because it’s the commercial heart of the city, lively from morning till night with its markets, shops, and street vendors. Perfect for experiencing local life!

Here, the architecture blends historic buildings and more modern constructions, creating a contrast that I personally love. There’s often some chaos, so be prepared for it!

Hidden among its streets are some museums, as well as beautiful street art and charming, weathered churches. At night, some bars pulse to the rhythms of forró and pagode, especially on weekends.

It’s also a sensitive area, so always stay alert. I don’t recommend going on Sundays, as the streets are deserted.

Hotels in Recife Centro

Quintal293 ($$): This cozy room in a family home is ideal for couples and solo travelers. It features a garden view and a private bathroom.

Pousada Lorde Ingles ($$): This accommodation offers comfortable and clean apartments and rooms. It’s recommended for families and groups of friends, as the units can accommodate up to 4 people.

Hotel Central ($$): This charming retro hotel, all in pink, located in Recife Centro, offers rooms with simple and authentic decor. Its ideal location makes exploring the city center easy and convenient.

TOLIVE One Housi Recife by Carpediem ($$$): Located right in the city center, this property offers studios for greater independence, as well as very spacious rooms ideal for families or groups of friends. Its greatest perk? A cozy swimming pool!

What to do in Recife Centro?

  • Spend a Sunday noon at the Mercado de Boa Vista: The terraces fill the courtyard of this traditional market, lively with samba rhythms.
  • Visit the Museu de Arte de Pernambuco: This museum showcases a rich collection of regional art, from Baroque to contemporary.
  • Shop for souvenirs at Casa da Cultura: A former prison turned craft center, it’s the perfect place to find textiles, jewelry, and typical local items.
  • Visit the numerous churches downtown: Among colonial architecture and Baroque decorations, some are true gems.

3. Olinda

I know: Olinda is not a neighborhood of Recife. In fact, my favorite city in Brazil is located less than 10 km to the north and is an ideal destination for all travelers in the region.

With its unique atmosphere—historic, artistic, and joyfully colorful—it feels like you’re walking inside a postcard.

The colonial architecture is very well-preserved, with its churches perched on high ground and its centuries-old houses. Amid steep hills, there are sublime viewpoints overlooking Recife and the ocean.

In short, for me, it’s a destination you can’t miss. Although most tourists only spend a day there, I recommend staying overnight to fully enjoy its vibe, especially at night in Alto da Sé.

Hotels in Olinda

Rosário Temporada Hostel ($): This hostel offers basic rooms but remains an excellent option thanks to its outdoor pool, lush garden, and pleasant terrace. Plus, it’s ideally located just a few steps from several beaches.

Pousada Convento da Conceição ($$): I had the chance to stay at this former convent and highly recommend it. The setting is magnificent, and the rooms are impeccably maintained. It also features a terrace with beautiful views. Perfect for solo travelers and couples!

Pousada São Pedro ($$): Located just 800 meters from Praia dos Milagres beach, this option offers simple but comfortable rooms, with the added bonus of a pool to cool off.

Hotel 7 Colinas ($$$): A true oasis of peace located in the heart of a beautiful park, this luxury hotel offers modern rooms, a large swimming pool, free parking, and a gym for a stay with all the comforts.

What to do in Olinda?

  • Stroll through the streets of the historic center: You’ll be able to admire the cobblestone alleys, colorful houses, and colonial façades.
  • Visit the town’s churches: Featuring Baroque and Rococo styles, some are true treasures.
  • Eat a tapioca at Alto da Sé: Enjoy this local specialty, sweet or savory, while soaking up the lively atmosphere.
  • Shop for local crafts: Many shops and artist workshops offer handmade ceramics, jewelry, and decorative pieces.
