  1. The Medina
  2. The New City
  3. Ras El Ma

Chefchaouen in a few words

If you’ve landed on this page, you probably already know that the blue-painted facades of the houses are Chefchaouen’s main attraction.

This gives the city a calming atmosphere and provides the perfect opportunity to capture stunning photos.

The Moroccan city, home to around 40,000 residents, stretches across 4,000 km² and is nestled in the heart of the Rif Mountains.

Its exceptional natural setting, with its peaks, valleys, and hidden waterfalls, is an essential part of its unique charm.

Chefchaouen Morocco: where to stay ?

Where to stay in Chefchaouen? For me, the most obvious answer is in the medina! This is where everything happens, and you can fully immerse yourself in Chefchaouen’s thousand shades of blue.

However, the new town and the Ras El Ma area are also worth considering for your stay.

Beyond the neighborhoods, you’ll find here a selection of diverse hotels, catering to all tastes and budgets, to make your experience even more enjoyable.

1. La Medina

To reach the medina, you’ll have to climb quite a few steps. You might think it’s a minor detail.

Well, not really—if you’re carrying heavy luggage, it can be quite inconvenient.

Of course, you can take a taxi to help you get closer, but keep in mind that many streets are pedestrian-only.

That being said, staying in the medina remains the best option. It allows you to immerse yourself daily in its magical blue atmosphere and freely explore this vibrant tourist area.

Most of the city’s attractions, as well as numerous cafés, restaurants, and artisan shops, are located within the medina.

From budget-friendly hostels to more luxurious riads, the medina offers a wide variety of accommodations to suit every budget.

My Favorite Hotels in The Medina

Palacio Al-Andalus ($$): Located in the heart of the medina, this riad offers air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms. The entire property is thoughtfully decorated, making it an excellent choice for couples and small groups of friends.

Dar Chefchaouen ($$): This beautiful riad offers very affordable family rooms in the heart of the medina. All rooms are simple yet comfortable, with views of the interior courtyard. It’s an excellent option for families, couples, friends, or even solo travelers.

Hostel Aline ($): This establishment is the best option for budget travelers, thanks to its dormitories. The common lounge and the terrace, which offers stunning views of the city, are perfect spots to relax and meet other travelers.

  • Outa El Hamman Square: The heart of the medina, featuring the mosque and numerous restaurants.
  • Admire the Grand Mosque: Known for its beautiful octagonal minaret.

2. The New Town

These are newer homes built around the medina. While you won’t be in the heart of the action, you’ll easily reach the charming blue alleys in no time.

This area is home to larger hotels and offers a wide range of amenities, from banks and supermarkets to restaurants serving international cuisine.

It’s an excellent option if you’re traveling by car, as parking in the medina is nearly impossible.

My Favorite Hotels in The New City

Joli studio de charme à Chaouen ($$$): This studio is a perfect option for couples seeking more independence. In addition to the bedroom, they will have a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a bathroom. The medina is located about 1 km away.

Aparthotel Dar Nowara Chaouen ($$): Perfect for families and small groups of friends, this recently renovated accommodation offers simple yet very comfortable rooms.

What to Do in The New City?

  • Spend time in modern cafés and restaurants: perfect for slow travel enthusiasts.

3. Ras El Ma

The slopes of Ras El Ma are an excellent option for finding accommodation in Chefchaouen.

Situated away from the hustle and nestled in nature, they offer an ideal setting to recharge, while still being just a few minutes from the heart of the medina.

From this peaceful haven, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the medina, with the opportunity to explore the surrounding landscapes on foot, from mountain trails to hidden waterfalls.

My Favorite Hotels in Ras El Ma

Haven Hills Social Club ($$): Perched on the mountain, this accommodation is ideal for solo travelers or couples looking to recharge in the heart of nature. The simple yet charming decor is complemented by exceptional views.

Auberge Casa Linda ($$): Families will appreciate this accommodation, which offers spacious rooms and an outdoor pool. Nestled in nature, it’s the perfect place to relax while knowing that the medina is just a short walk away.
