Some cities don’t immediately captivate you, yet they end up leaving the best memories.
When I arrived with my backpack in the fashion capital, it wasn’t exactly to raid the city’s luxury boutiques, nor was it to marvel at its monuments.
To be honest, all I had heard about Milan were negative things! Ugly, cold, lacking in tourist appeal… So, as you can imagine, it wasn’t a destination that made it onto my bucket list.
But an old Italian flatmate had settled there, and since I was passing through France, in Savoy, I thought, “Let’s pay her a visit!“
And as you can imagine, I loved Milan! It’s actually a very beautiful city with lots to discover if you take the time to explore.

Milan in a nutshell
Milan is located in the north of Italy, at the heart of the Lombardy region.
Known as the fashion capital, the city balances between understated elegance and vibrant energy.
With around 1.4 million inhabitants, it is the second-largest city in Italy, famous for its economic dynamism, artistic scene, and unique style.
Milan has many neighborhoods, some further from the historic center or more suited for residential life than tourism.
But the good news is that there are 4 neighborhoods perfect for easily discovering Milan and making the most of its tourist offerings.

Hotels in Milan, Italy: Where to Sleep?
Most of you will only stay a few days in Milan, so logically, you’ll head to the historic center… and that’s the right choice! This allows you to visit the main attractions while enjoying the buzz of the city’s most popular streets.
However, a word of caution: Milan is an expensive city! So, moving a little away from the hustle and bustle to stay in more residential neighborhoods — but equally lively ones — could be an option worth considering.
And even more so when you take into account that public transportation, especially the metro, is very efficient, so wherever you are, you’ll be able to easily reach monuments, museums, restaurants, and other points of interest.
Here are the neighborhoods I recommend:
- Centro Storico: The Duomo is just a stone’s throw away, and the tourist crowds are ever-present. It’s the best neighborhood to be at the heart of the action. But, of course, it’s expensive!
- Brera: The trendy, Bohemian neighborhood, with cobblestone streets that give it all its charm. It’s very close to the center.
- Porta Venezia: A strategic area, close to the train station of the same name and just a few minutes from the historic center.
- Navigli: I stayed near this charming neighborhood, with its beautiful canals. The best part? The nightlife here is thriving!
1. Centro Storico
The historic center of Milan is the ideal place for a tourist stay, especially if it’s your first time in the city.
This is where the heart of Milan beats, with iconic monuments, elegant shopping streets, and traditional restaurants.
Staying in this neighborhood means immersing yourself in Milan’s history while enjoying easy walking access to the main attractions.

Antica Locanda dei Mercanti ($$$): Located in an elegant 18th-century building, this hotel offers several double rooms, some with a balcony! A peaceful retreat in the heart of Milan’s tourist area.
Duomo Hotel & Apartments Milano ($$$): Treat yourself to a luxurious stay at this hotel, located near the city’s main attractions. The spacious rooms are beautifully decorated, each featuring a private bathroom and a dining area.
Sonder Manzoni ($$$$): Enjoy a luxury stay in these apartments, ideally located in the heart of Milan’s tourist area. The decor is meticulously designed. Perfect for couples, families, and groups of friends!

If you have a bohemian soul, Brera is the Milan neighborhood made for you. Known for its art galleries, cobblestone streets, and artistic atmosphere, it is the perfect place for culture lovers.
You can stroll leisurely through its alleys, discovering original shops that showcase local craftsmanship.
The warm-colored facades invite you to enjoy the magical ambiance of this peaceful, charming neighborhood, while still being close to the city center.
Hotels in Brera
Tiny Studio ($$): One of the few budget-friendly options in the neighborhood. This small studio with simple decor offers everything you need to spend a few nights in Milan with total independence. Perfect for couples!
Brera Apartments in Garibaldi ($$$): Very bright apartments, tastefully decorated to ensure you have a peaceful stay with complete freedom. Ideal for couples, small groups of friends, and small families.
Brera Prestige B$B ($$$$): If you want to enjoy a luxurious stay, this establishment offers comfortable, spacious, and very clean rooms. An excellent choice for couples or small groups of friends!
What to do in Brera?
- Visit the Pinacoteca di Brera
- Stroll through the cobblestone streets and admire the old facades
- Hunt for treasures in designer boutiques
- Enjoy the antique markets
3. Porta Venezia
Porta Venezia is a practical alternative for tourists staying just a few days in Milan, as the Porta Venezia train station is nearby.
However, it’s not just its convenience that makes it special! This cosmopolitan neighborhood, located at the intersection of Milanese elegance and an alternative atmosphere, is highly appreciated for its beautiful avenues and parks.
It’s also the hotspot for LGBTQ+ friendly nightlife, where the scene is lively and vibrant.
Hotels in Porta Venezia
City Center Best Hostel ($$): If you’re looking for an affordable option near the train stations and not too far from the main attractions, this hostel will interest you. It offers simple rooms that are more than enough to comfortably spend 1 or 2 nights.
Hotel Teco ($$$): This unpretentious hotel has recently been renovated. You’ll love its vintage charm. It offers various types of rooms, both for solo travelers and families looking to explore the city.
Worldhotel Cristoforo Colombo ($$$$): This property offers spacious and bright rooms, perfect for a romantic getaway or solo stay. Guests can also enjoy the bar, spa, and gym, not to mention its prime location!
What to do in Porta Venezia?
- Stroll through the public gardens of the Villa Reale
- Admire the Art Nouveau architecture
- Enjoy a spritz at a bar on Via Lecco
- Go shopping on Corso Buenos Aires
4. Navigli
Navigli is undoubtedly the most picturesque neighborhood in Milan, famous for its canals!
It is also the favorite area for tourists who enjoy the nightlife. Bars and restaurants are plentiful, creating a youthful and festive atmosphere that doesn’t take away from the charm of the area. In fact, a walk along the water is always a great way to relax.
Personally, it’s the neighborhood I recommend you stay in.
Hotels in Navigli
Combo Milano ($$): This hostel is an excellent option, especially for solo travelers. It offers both private rooms and several shared dormitory options. Its strong point? An ideal café for working!
B&B Isola Libera ($$): This recently renovated establishment offers several double rooms, perfect for couples. It is located near all means of transportation.
Abracadabra Tortona ($$): Very simple rooms, but clean and comfortable to fully enjoy the neighborhood. A great option for couples or solo travelers!
What to do in Navigli?
- Enjoying an aperitif on a terrace by the canal
- Exploring the hidden courtyards of Navigli’s houses
- Taking a boat ride along the canals
To conclude, I highly recommend staying in the Navigli district. Not only because it’s a charming neighborhood with plenty of bars and restaurants, but also because you’ll find more affordable accommodation options here. And don’t forget, as I mentioned earlier, Milan can be quite expensive!
